Binding the Land Together 2025
This project was developed for the new office space, at South32 Perth Office Art Program. The program commissioned a collaborative ghost network by Anindillyakwa Arts and the Ghost Net collective artists Lynnette Griffiths and Marion Gaemers.
The brief was: responding to the curatorial narrative of place: water, earth and nature. The results are three powerful works that discuss country, the waterways and the coastline.
Four extended workshops developed ideas and shared skills. Lynnette and Marion led the project along with Bernadette Watts and together they developed different models of collaboration so the women from the two art centres on the island could work independently and together to produce the works.
Title: Ngarna Ngarruwa Karuma Ngarrawadanguma enena-manja Akuwaduwada: Binding the land together.
Artists Story:
We see the place changing every year, coastline is changed every year, seeing ghost net washed up and trapping marine life it damages the reef and corals, it damages the turtles and dugongs.
Where the river meets the sea you see the difference when you go fishing and hunting everything has changed on our land. The rivers change too, before it used to be crystal clear every day full of people swimming going down and looking for yams. These days it's mucky and not safe for kids to go swimming.
We see the land is changing.
It's all about the land and soil it used to be good for yams and green plum, after school as kids we would go looking for plums. But they took all our jungle away to build houses and a mine highway, now it's very hard to go out and look for Bush Tucker. The landscapes are different now when you go out in the bush.
Will it ever be the same for the next generation?
