Coral Chronicles
Queensland Museum
Tropics – Townsville 2024

Working with the Museum Staff, GNC artists Lynnette Griffiths and Marion Gaemers, created an immersive space that was filled with information and elements of wonder. People could view the story of ghost net - what is ghost net and where is it found. They could understand the meaning and symbolism around the health of the ocean and the reef.

The artists also ran workshops giving participants the opportunity to become an artist and collaborate by adding their artworks to a coral bommie. Community participants also created and contributed to a wall of swimming Ghost Net Rays.

The exhibition was broken up into sections which asked the viewer to respond in various ways by considering;

PROBLEM

What is it made of?

What damage does it cause?

What happens as it breaks down?

CREATIVE INTERPRETATION

Immersive space, creative interpretation - what are artists doing with this material to make art?  Viewers can walk through a hand-stitched world of wonder to reflect on materials and how they are impacting our oceans.

HOPE/RENEWAL

A space that is full of hope and renewal - a space where people are encouraged to make, do and face these problems with hope and energy.

The Ghost Net Collective acknowledges the Gimuy Walubara Yidinji people, the traditional custodians of Gimuy - Cairns and surrounding district. We acknowledge the Erubam Le of Erub Island and all the First Nations Peoples of the Torres Strait Islands and mainland Australia that we visit. We pay our respect to past and present Elders. We acknowledge the important role that art has played on these lands for thousands of years and believe that, through collaboration, we can make a difference.
